The Neonatal Information System™ (NIS™) is a comprehensive clinical information management system that incorporates data from all aspects of clinical care of the critically ill newborn. With the incorporation of .NET technology into the NIS™, the question of 'what the NIS™ data capture screens look like' has become obsolete. MDS works with each client hospital to select the appearance and content of the data capture screens that work best for them; the NIS™ also gives you the ability to change those screens as you wish.
The actual data capture is accomplished through a variety of methods.
Data Capture Examples:
- Import data from the hospital EMR
- Voice recognition
- Drop-down menus
- Point-and-Click choices
- Comment libraries
- Textual
- Interfaces to data sources generated from other areas of the hospital.
Each hospital’s NICU has complete control and flexibility as to the type, amount, frequency, and method of data capture. You can choose detailed hourly, daily or summary data capture or anything in-between and in any combination. Further, you choose to capture information by systems, problem groups or any other method that works for your hospital.
Or – you may want to keep very detailed data while your patient is in the NICU but in more of a summary format when he transitions to a step-down or transitional unit. It’s entirely up to you; and, you can change your method anytime you wish.
You Define the Data Elements You Need
The choices are all built-in the NIS™ – But you control which data elements appear on screen. Make your choices by picking from a menu of options so you won’t need your IT department or programmers. Items that you don’t select won’t appear on the screen – and your screens will look clear and crisp and contain only the information that you choose.
Within each broad category are hundreds of fields to choose from and each field comes with its own set of choices which you can add to at anytime. The NIS™ is constructed to recognizes synonyms and abbreviations – for instance, it knows that RDS=Respiratory Distress Syndrome=HMD=Hyaline Membrane Disease. Use the built-in lookups, or create your own.
You can also elect to have many fields automatically calculate for you – such as:
- Nutritional and TPN Calculations
- Daily Growth Percentiles
- Growth curves - Lubchenco curves or any others that you choose!
- Just to name a few
And, there are many built-in error checks and security features; all of which help ensure the ultimate high quality of your data.
NIS™ HL7 Interfaces
Interfaces with sources of patient data generated from other areas of the hospital include - but are not limited to:
- Admissions (ADT)
- Obstetrics
- Pharmacy
- Patient monitors
- Bedside laptops and handheld devices
- Laboratory
- Computerized Physician Orders
- Radiology
- Hospital EMRs
- Or any other source of HL7 data transmission
The Broad Range of NIS™ Data Choices
Here are some examples of the more commonly used NIS™ field choices – both single valued fields (such as birthweight) and multi-valued fields (such as diagnoses or medications). These are just some of the choices built-in the NIS™ – But you control which data elements you wish to track and have appear on your NIS™ screens.
